In the past the scientific community in Korea has been hesitant to engage with the creationists in fear that it could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one example of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.

In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

What is Creationism?

While Creationists may not all be Christian, many are. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs might not be as well-known However, their beliefs are just as intense like those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the original species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next step is to remove the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an image of students as being negative. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
